April 2024 Member’s Dinner Meeting

At the April, 2024 monthly chapter dinner meeting, we had a headcount of about 34 chapter Ikes who enjoyed a scrumptious meatball sub dinner.

NEW MEMBERS:

Chapter President Chris Ferguson swore in two new members at this dinner meeting.  Shown below are Gary Beemster, and Starlite Cassias.  Welcome to the chapter to you both!

GUEST SPEAKER:

The guest speaker for the evening was David Rosenthal, City of Norfolk Reservoir Manager who spoke on the topic of “151 Year of Water Supply — The Historical Development of a Reliable System of Water Supply for the City of Norfolk”.   David reviewed the historical records going back to 1866 when the City of Norfolk was given a charter to form a water company.  He discussed how lakes initially were formed from the creation of dams in the small tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay and Broad Creek, using steam shovels, horses, and carts.  By 1873, pumping stations in Princess Anne County were distributing water to Norfolk residents. Today, he said, the total capacity of the Norfolk water supply, tapping into Suffolk and Virginia beach lakes, is approximately 15 billion gallons.
