The Nansemond River Preservation Alliance is seeking volunteers to spend a couple of hours this month restoring a 100-foot buffer adjacent to North Suffolk’s Sleepy Hole Park’s new 300-foot pier and kayak/canoe launch. The water access project is almost complete and is expected to open to the public later this month or early February.
Volunteers will be planting trees and native shrubs and creating a mulched walking path in order to help filter rain water and reduce runoff into the Nansemond River. The goal is to improve an area that is now mostly grass with minimal vegetation. The effort is in collaboration with the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
Volunteers are needed from 9:30 to 11:30a.m. Jan. 23 and 30. The work is weather dependent – temperatures need to be 40 degrees or higher with minimal wind.
