VA DEQ Clean Power Plan Listening Session

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is conducting a Listening Session regarding the Clean Power Plan on October 6th, 2015 from 5pm until 8pm at the Tidewater Community College campus, 120 Campus Drive, Portsmouth, VA.  A reminder, our S-N IWLA Chapter Members are encouraged to attend this Listening Session, but are reminded that they should go as individuals rather than representing the Izaak Walton League of America, whether at the local, divisional, or national levels.  For more information on this event go to http://www.vocesverdes.org/in-the-news/627/virginia–5-upcoming-public-listening-sessions-regarding-cpp-proposal.

The Listening Session event was brought to our attention by the guest speaker at our September, 2015 Chapter Banquet Dinner meeting, Mariah Davis. Ms. Davis is the Hampton Roads Sportsmen Organizer for the Virginia Conservation Network (VCN). VCN is the state affiliate for the National Wildlife Federation and is a coalition of 120 environmental member organizations in Virginia. They work as a voice for conservation communities and organizations across Virginia to conserve the commonwealth’s natural resources, taking grassroots efforts to a state level during the General Assembly. For more information regarding VCN, they can be reached at www.vcnva.org.

Ms. Davis’ presentation included a discussion of her organization and an overview of the recently passed Clean Water Rule and Clean Power Plan. The Clean Water Rule is designed to protect navigable waterways and their tributaries, including 28,000 streams in Virginia. The Clean Power Plan establishes the first national limits on carbon emissions and is a step toward reducing carbon pollution from power plants and takes real action on climate change. The plan provides guidelines for the development, submittal and implementation of state plans that establish standards of performance or other measures for affected power plants in order to implement the interim and final carbon dioxide emission performance rates.
