On the evening of April 21, 2022, the Suffolk Clean Community Commission (SCCC) hosted a volunteer appreciation evening at the Planter’s Club to recognize several key groups of volunteers who have helped numerous times at various cleanup and recycling events throughout the city of Suffolk. These groups comprised many disparate entities including doctors, fraternities, farmers, banks, and various community groups. Representing our own S-N IWLA chapter at this event were chapter Ikes Tim and Elaine Doxey, Jennifer and David Wood, and Ray and Claudia Powell. Suffolk Mayor Mike Duman, Vice Mayor Leroy Bennett and city council member Shelley Butler Barlow were in attendance, and Mayor Duman gave a keynote speech to thank everyone for helping to keep our city streets and waterways clean.
After all other appreciation certificates had been handed out, Tim Doxey (S-N IWLA Chapter SOS Coordinator/Clean Water Liaison & Treasurer) was asked to come forward. Wayne Jones presented Tim a certificate of appreciation for our S-N IWLA chapter along with a broken paddle that he had saved from a past Nansemond river cleanup.
Wayne commented that the paddle was the perfect gift to recognize Tim’s leadership and ongoing support in helping to organize volunteers’ efforts at river cleanups and reminded everyone that the next river cleanup is scheduled for June 4th.
