Spring 2019 Nansemond River Cleanup

On Saturday, March 30th, chapter volunteers turned out to participate in the Keep Suffolk Beautiful spring river cleanup. The event was a city wide event with volunteers working on the shore, in town and on the water. The city’s Litter Control Office coordinated the kayaks and canoes from  the Hilton Marina and down town areas. Our chapter coordinated volunteer efforts in the areas adjacent to the businesses along North Main Street that back up to the river.

The weather was great and we had a total of 44 volunteers working in our area. Volunteers came from our chapter , members of the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance and Kings Fork High School students.  Our group of volunteers managed to collect 91 bags of trash, 28 tires, 3 shopping carts, an overstuffed recliner and approximately 400 pounds of misc. debris ( see slide show below).

The other groups of volunteers also collected a substantial amount of trash. For more information on the overall cleanup you can visit the city’s Facebook page.
