Spring 2018 Nansemond River Cleanup

Despite unusually chilly spring temperatures and a  slight breeze, 33 volunteers turned out Saturday morning, March 24th, for the chapter’s third spring river clean up. Volunteers from the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance came out to give us a hand. Volunteers picked up trash and other debris from along the banks of the Nansemond River behind the businesses along North Main Street. The event was also supported by the city’s Litter Control Coordinator, Wayne Jones, by loaning us safety vests and trash grabbers as well as supplying some trash bags. Wayne arranged for a temporary storage location for the collected materials and subsequent pick up by the city for final disposal.

At the end of the event volunteers had collected 85 bags of trash, 15 tires, 14 grocery carts, 2 bicycles and numerous other items including a front door. Chapter volunteers were able to earn up to 4 hours toward their individual annual work  participation hours requirement.
