There were plenty of community volunteer opportunities for our chapter members on what turned out to be a beautiful Saturday morning on November 9th. Members could choose from 3 (three) separate events, either (a) to show up at the chapter park for a scheduled maintenance workday, (b) to participate in the chapter’s Adopt-A-Road cleanup of trash alongside Kings Fork and Providence Roads, or lastly, (c) to help sling tires during Suffolk SCCC’s (Suffolk Clean Community Commission) tire amnesty recycle event on Carolina Road.
Chapter Ikes Mike Lane and Ray Powell chose the latter option, toiling alongside SCCC employees Susan and Mark Davis to collect, tally, and stack over 1,170 tires at the Public Works Operation site for later recycling.
Daniel McDonald, Suffolk Public Works Litter Control Coordinator, enlisted the aid of two additional SCCC employees Jarret, and Elon, whose help was invaluable in helping keep up with the unrelenting waves of trucks, trailers, and cars that lined up to drop off old tires during a 3 (three) hour stretch.
The tires were heavy and some were filled with rain water which sloshed onto our clothes, but there was a lot of good natured bantering and joking around by the work crew, which made the job a whole lot easier.
Mike manned an additional station for accepting old, dead batteries, and as shown below he loaded them into his truck for later transport to a recycling facility.
