November 2021 Suffolk Recycle Event Recap

It was a breezy, cool fall day on Saturday, November, 13th, 2021, for the Suffolk Keep America Beautiful Recycle campaign at the Carolina Road  location.

Wayne Jones, Suffolk Litter Control Coordinator, is shown here with clipboard in hand planning for the morning’s activities.

Chapter Board member Mike Lane and Chapter Ike Ray Powell pitched in at the tire recycling station to help other volunteers unload approximately 200 tires from Suffolk citizens’ vehicles, a low volume as compared to past events.

There were other stations at this event, including one for accepting worn US flags for proper disposal, manned by scouts from Troop#16, as shown in the photo to the left.

Below, you can see that only a few car and truck batteries, collected at the SPSA station, were loaded into Mike’s truck for later recycling.

New stations were added this year for collecting scrap metal/appliances, and Ray and Mike helped load a few old, tired, freezers and refrigerators into a refuse collection trailer for later recycling.

Also,  Ray helped Wayne load smaller batteries of all shapes and sizes (AA, AAA, C, D, smart phone, power tools et. al.) into big, heavy recycling drums, and there was a lot of exercise to be had chasing down windblown pieces of trash from collection bins at the plastic, cardboard, and shredding stations.

As always, there was a lot of camaraderie with good-natured kidding around amongst all the volunteers who participated, and the smiles and thank-yous that were given by  Suffolk citizens as their vehicles were unloaded made the day very satisfying for all.
