On Saturday morning, March 19th, S-N IWLA chapter Ikes Gregg Young, Claudia and Ray Powell, and Virginia Wahab, gathered along with about sixty (60) other volunteers in the back parking lot of the Nansemond Brewing Station in downtown Suffolk for Keep Suffolk Beautiful’s first public event of the year–the St. Patrick’s Day Cleanup.
Wayne Jones of the SCCC (Suffolk Clean Community Commission) gave the assembled group a brief safety lecture and instructed everyone to grab safety vests, gloves, trash bags, and pickers before heading out in all compass directions to pick up trash from street sidewalks, parking lots, and alongside railroad tracks.
Altogether, the group collected 2 tires plus about 1,600 pounds of trash in 64 trash bags. After the event some of the folks who participated enjoyed a refreshing IPA (Indiana Pale Ale) beverage at the local Nansemond Brewing Station. All in all, it was a very rewarding endeavor to help clean up the Suffolk downtown community.
