The chapter held our monthly member’s meeting on Wednesday February 16th at the Kings Fork Community House. Member attendance has slowly increased as the pandemic concerns begin to decline. Members had a chance to meet some of the new members, get reacquainted with others and get caught up on chapter activities.
A chili cookoff, once again coordinated by Joyce Dugan, was the center of attention for dinner. A variety of salads, cornbread and deserts rounded out the meal. There were six chili entries in the competition. Jacob Bosco was voted best of the night with Chris Ferguson and Virginia Wahab tying for second place. Joyce awarded Jacob a red plastic serving spoon and a black plastic serving spoon to each of the second-place finalists. This was the second chili cookoff the chapter has held and by the comments from members it won’t be the last.
After dinner, Chapter President Chris Ferguson swore in two new members Daniel and Andrea Diehl. He also discussed recent chapter business and reviewed upcoming events for the next few months. A schedule of upcoming events can be found in the calendar section of our chapter website for those who were unable to attend the meeting. The floor was opened to committee chairs and members.
David Perdue, chapter Scholarship Chair, announced that this year the chapter is offering two $1,000.00 scholarships. Anyone with a child in high school or attending college with a conservation or environmental related major could be eligible. Applications and eligibility requirements are located on our website at http://sniwla.org/scholarships/. Remember, you don’t have to be a member or referred by a member to be eligible. Share this information with family and friends so we can get this information out to as many people as possible. If you have questions, you can contact David Perdue by email at davidperdue@yahoo.com .
Ken Dugan, chapter Youth Program Coordinator, discussed the upcoming spring Teddy Bear Hunt that is currently in the planning stage. He passed around a volunteer signup sheet for those members who can volunteer to help with the event. For those members who were not present, you can get information on the event and volunteer to help out by contacting Ken. He will be able to explain the volunteer positions he still needs to fill. If you have children, grandchildren or friends with children between 3 and 10 years old and would like to participate in the event you need to contact Ken no later than April 16th to reserve a space. The event will be open to the public and space is limited so RSVPs are required. Ken can be contacted at kdugan105@gmail.com or by telephone at 757-635-1025.
