On the morning of April 9th, 10 (ten) volunteers showed up at the chapter park front gate entrance to pick up trash as part of our chapter’s continuing semi-annual commitment to holding Adopt-A-Road roadside trash cleanups.
After Mike Lane, our Adopt-A-Road committee chairman, handed out safety vests, trash pickers, and trash bags to the volunteers, they headed out to begin collecting trash alongside mile-long stretches of Kings Fork and Providence Roads from the Community Center to Route 460/Route 10.
Altogether, 24 full bags were collected with an approximated weight of 600 pounds, plus the usual assortment of a few other odd and ends.
During the cleanup, Mike Lane, our Adopt-A-Road committee chairman, was approached by a neighbor on Kings Fork Road who thanked us for our efforts in picking up the trash, and who also expressed interest in joining the chapter. We don’t always get thanked for picking up trash but it sure feels gratifying when it happens!
Our continuing participation in the Adopt-A-Road program in cleaning up these ditches is paying off with a reduced amount of trash to be collected as compared to previous years. Mike will return the trash pickers and safety vests to the city of Suffolk’s Litter Control Department and schedule a subsequent trash pickup from our park front gate staging area.
Member volunteers can get credit for the hours they worked towards fulfilling the chapter’s annual volunteer participation requirement by filling out and submitting work hour credit forms to Mike, to the chapter’s membership chair or to any board member, or by making an entry in the park front gate mailbox sign-in sheet with the work column checked.
Thanks to all who participated! And, thank you Mike for coordinating this cleanup.
