The chapter recently participated in the International Coastal Cleanup event held by the City of Suffolk. The turnout for this cleanup was lower than usual. The event was originally scheduled for the 1st of October but had to be postponed a week due to inclement weather associated with hurricane Ian. There were also a number of other local events going on that Saturday.
A total of 25 volunteers participated in the event. Of those volunteers, 5 were chapter members. Even with a lower-than-normal turnout, participants were able to collect 63 bags of trash, 33 tires, a futon, a couple of grocery carts and other miscellaneous debris. Our chapter volunteers focused their efforts behind several business on North Main Street. The picture below is of the trash collected by our chapter volunteers.
We appreciate the efforts of those who participated and hope to get more volunteers involved in the river cleanups next year. There is still plenty of trash out there!
