On the morning of Saturday, May 22nd, 2021, the weather cooperated with cool breezes and moderate temperatures for the SCCC (Suffolk Clean Community Commission) Tire Amnesty Recycling event held off Carolina Road in Suffolk.
Two S-N IWLA chapter Ikes, Mike Lane and Ray Powell, helped stack tires at this event from 9am until 1pm. As you can see in the photos below, over 1,000 car and truck tires were stacked into piles 5 tires high for later pickup by SPSA (Southeastern Public Service Authority) for recycling/shredding. Also, Mike collected a dozen or more car batteries that he will recycle at Arzillo Recycling with proceeds donated to our chapter. Also, Chapter Ikes H.J. Miller and Dana Hale showed up to offer their support.
Over the years, our chapter has participated in numerous SCCC recycling events and Wayne Jones, Suffolk Litter Control Coordinator, knows that he can count on our support with sleeves rolled up to help stack these tires. Wayne provided work gloves, cold drinks, and lots of camaraderie, frequently checking up on all the volunteers to make sure they had everything they needed.
