June 3rd, 2017 was Clean the Bay Day. More than 200 volunteers participated in the local portion of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s 29th annual cleanup event.
Wayne Jones, the Suffolk Litter Control Coordinator, organized the local portion of the event. Wayne said that this event attracted the most participation in Suffolk ever and he hopes the city can build on the success. There were many agencies, organizations as well as individuals among the volunteers. Our chapter was represented by Mike Lane, Joe Walters, Cris Walters, Chris Walters, and Cameron Allen.
According to Wayne, there were more than 40 tires, several shopping carts, car batteries and bags and bags of trash collected during the local portion of the event. Officials from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation estimated that volunteers had removed approximately 100,000 pounds of litter and debris from some 450 miles of shoreline around the state during the three hour effort
It was good to see some of our newest members step up and volunteer their time and represent our chapter by participating in this event.
