{"id":44847,"date":"2025-06-26T15:35:55","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T19:35:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/?p=44847"},"modified":"2025-06-27T07:23:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T11:23:40","slug":"june-2025-members-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/june-2025-members-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"June  2025 Members meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-44848 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2265-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2265-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2265-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2265.jpg 359w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/>The June members meeting was held on June 18<sup>th<\/sup>. \u00a0President Chris Ferguson called the meeting to order and introduced the guest speakers for the evening, Tonya Bangley (left) and Austin Kulp (below right), teachers at King\u2019s Fork High School.\u00a0 Tonya is a science teacher and Austin teaches physical education.\u00a0 The Virginia Standards of Learning now require motor skills development in outdoor pursuits and aquatics as well as environmental sciences.\u00a0\u00a0 Tonya and Austin have embraced the Meaningful Watershed Environmental Experiences (MWEE- \u201cme-we\u201d) as a pathway to watershed stewardship.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-44849 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2272-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2272-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2272-114x150.jpg 114w, https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2272.jpg 377w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>MWEE is a student centered, standards-based learning that focuses on environmental issues in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.\u00a0 The program promotes inquiring, problem solving and stewardship.\u00a0 In other words, learning about the watershed by being in the watershed.<\/p>\n<p>There are four essential MWEE elements: exploring local watershed issues using data and research; hands-on environmental exploration; analyzing the data collected and proposing solutions; and taking informed action and advocating for solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Tonya stated that we share very similar goals for conservation, monitoring, education and youth outdoor engagement.\u00a0 MWEE also provides real-world action and potential future employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The Chapter partnered with the Nansemond River Garden Club, Tonya and Austin for an event at our chapter park on Thursday, June 19.\u00a0 A group of youth will collect and analyze micro invertebrates from the pond.\u00a0 This will allow them to evaluate the quality of the pond water.\u00a0 In addition, they will learn to fish by bait casting and fly fishing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-44850 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sniwla.org\/sniwla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/lores_IMG_2261-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" \/>Following the presentation, Virginia Wahab (left) and Chris Ferguson presented the 2024 Tobin Award to Darden Langston.\u00a0 The Tobin Award is presented annually to the member who makes significant contributions to the operations of the Chapter.\u00a0 Congratulations to the longest serving member of our Chapter.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Richard Kole was sworn in as our newest member by Chris Ferguson.
