Scholarships (APPLICATIONS CLOSED AS OF April 1st, 2026)<\/em><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Summary<\/h2>\n

Each year, our chapter awards one or more education scholarships from our chapter’s scholarship fund that is replenished periodically through chapter fundraisers. For 2026, the chapter board of directors has authorized that two (2) education scholarships be awarded in the amounts of $1,000 each<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To apply please review the minimum qualifications and application submission form and submission procedures carefully as shown below, and be sure to submit your application no earlier than the opening date of February 1st, 2026, and <\/strong>no later than the closing date of April 1st, 2026.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Objective<\/h2>\n

The Chapter\u2019s objective in offering education scholarships is to assist in the education of students pursuing studies in areas related to the goals of our Chapter.<\/p>\n

Who can Apply<\/h2>\n

The Chapter encourages all eligible individuals who have been accepted into or are currently attending an accredited college, university or technical school to apply. \u00a0Appropriate curricula for applicants must stress subjects related to conservation and the environment.<\/em><\/p>\n

When to Apply<\/h2>\n

Applications may\u00a0be submitted\u00a0beginning February 1st but no later than April 1st, the cutoff date.<\/p>\n

How To Apply – Summary Checklist<\/h2>\n

To ensure your application\u00a0will be accepted, we have provided\u00a0this handy summary checklist to help you submit a fully completed application:<\/p>\n

  1. Download the\u00a0Application form instructions<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Application form<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. Using a free PDF (portable document format) reader such as Adobe Reader<\/a>\u00a9, open the application form instructions and read them carefully, then open the application form and fill in the Contact Info on Sheet#1; fill in Honors and Extracurricular activities, Work History, and Career Plans on Sheet#2; and write an essay “Why I want this scholarship and what the environment and conservation means to me” on Sheet#3.<\/li>\n
  3. Save the modified application form (by doing a “save as<\/strong>” from within your PDF reader with a filename of your choosing, specifying a file extension of “.pdf”.\u00a0 Note: the Adobe license that permits you to save the data to a file in this manner is imbedded in the form itself.<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. When you are ready to submit your application, email the PDF file that you just created to our Chapter email address info@sniwla.org<\/a>\u00a0as an attachment. \u00a0(Note: less preferably, you can print a blank form, fill it in non-cursively with a pen and mail it via USPS to our Chapter PO box : “Attention: Scholarship Committee Chairman; S-N\u00a0IWLA; P. O. Box 351; Suffolk, VA 23439”.)<\/em><\/li>\n
  5. Send\u00a0your\u00a0current grade transcript (either official or unofficial, both are\u00a0acceptable<\/em>) to either our\u00a0Chapter email address info@sniwla.org<\/a> or to our Chapter PO box address shown above.<\/li>\n
  6. Request\u00a0two references from persons unrelated to you\u00a0who can speak of your\u00a0character, leadership, and academic ability. \u00a0At least one (1) of these references must be from a guidance counselor or teacher. \u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Send these references to either our Chapter email address info@sniwla.org<\/a> or to our P.O. box address shown above.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Award Selection Process<\/h2>\n

    The chapter scholarship committee, comprised of three chapter members in good standing and the chapter Treasurer, will review, score, and rank all accepted scholarship applications objectively to reach a consensus on the winning nomination(s).\u00a0 These will be presented to the chapter Board of Directors by the Scholarship Chairperson for approval at the May chapter board meeting. The winner(s) will be presented with their awards in June.<\/p>\n

    Background<\/h2>\n

    The Chapter’s scholarship fund was established by William E. Ashley from a donation of Cornelia Spivey in loving memory of her husband Vernon Spivey, a long time supporter of IWLA ideals and its objectives. Our Chapter’s mandate is to award at least a single $500 scholarship annually, in perpetuity. However, through fundraising efforts, the Board of Directors is able to offer larger and\/or more numerous scholarships at their discretion. \u00a0The \u00a0decision on how many awards to offer, and their dollar amount(s), is made each January at the Board of Directors meeting when approving the year’s budget.     <\/a>Award Recipients Historical Archive<\/h1>\n

    2025 – Katie Gallahorn<\/h3>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

    Katie Gallahorn was awarded a $1,000 scholarship at the July, 2025 chapter diner meeting.\u00a0 Katie graduated from Smithfield High School and will be attending Virginia Polytech Institute and <\/span>State University (Va. Tech) majoring in civil engineering. <\/span><\/p>\n

    2024 – Claire Conner and Ava Gonzales<\/h3>\n

    Our chapter awarded two (2) $1,000 scholarships in 2024.<\/p>\n

    \"\"Claire Conner (Stony Brook University) was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.\u00a0 Claire is currently considering notifications from other colleges but <\/span>has been accepted at Stony Brook University. She intends to study environmental policy and plans to go on<\/span> to Law School after obtaining her bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \"\"Ava Gonzales, (George Mason University) also was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Ava <\/span>plans to <\/span>major in Environmental Science. She <\/span>aspires to become an environmental protection specialist in either the <\/span>US Department of the Interior or the Environmental Protection <\/span>Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n

    2023 – Hayley Cherry<\/h3>\n

    Hayley Cherry was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Scholarship Chair David Perdue as shown below at the June, 2023 chapter dinner meeting.\u00a0 She will be attending Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina and will pursue a double major in sustainability development with a concentration in Environmental Studies and Recreation Management with a concentration in Outdoor Experiential Education.<\/p>\n

    2022 – Maurice Etiemble III, and Thomas Patterson.<\/h3>\n

    Our chapter awarded two (2) $1,000 scholarships in 2022.<\/p>\n

    Our chapter announced two $1,000 scholarships winners at the May, 2020 chapter board meeting.\u00a0 They are:<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/a>On June 21st our chapter awarded two $1,500 scholarships, one to Jena Cruz (on the left) and the other to Kelly Lafferty (on the right). Both young women are Suffolk residents and are majoring in environmental science. Jena will be a sophomore at Longwood College and Kelly will be a freshman at Allegheny College in the fall.<\/p>\n

    Trevor Fletcher \u00a0is studying Environmental Protections and Studies at Christopher Newport University. Nicole Troia is pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies at Hollins University.<\/p>\n

    2014 – Samuel Gittelman (Va. Tech) and Matthew Herrmann (Va Tech)<\/a>.<\/h3>\n

    \"Scholarship<\/a>\u00a0Mr. Samuel Gittelman is planning\u00a0to attain a B.A. in Environmental Resource Conservation from the School of Natural Resources, towards a career in forest resource management\/conservation.<\/p>\n

    Mr. Matthew Herrmann is planning to major in Agronomy\/College of Crop and Soil Sciences. His career goal is to re-turn to Isle of Wight county to work with farmers on improving crop yields while lessening environment impact.<\/p>\n

    2013 – Joshua Raby (O.D.U) and Ben Stephenson (Tidewater Community College)<\/p>\n

    2012 – Joshua Raby (O.D.U) and Thomas Westfall (Va. Tech).<\/p>\n

    2011 – Ben Stephenson (Tidewater Community College)<\/p>\n

    2010 – Leslie VanNiel (Unity College, Maine)<\/p>\n

    2009 – Kaitlin Xander (Auburn University) and Whitney Chavis (Wesleyan, NC)<\/p>\n

    2008 – No scholarships were awarded due to requirements not being met by any applicants.<\/p>\n

    2007 – Joshua Holland (Va. Tech) and Jessica Estienne (College of William & Mary)<\/p>\n

    2006 – Jason Herrala ( Va. Tech). 2\/8\/12.\u00a0 Jason Herrala\u00a0 graduated from Windsor High School in 2005, completed his studies at Virginia Tech and went on to complete his masters degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Science at Mississipi State. On December 1, 2011, he started a job as Assistant Director with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, working in Prestonsburg (Eastern KY) at Dewey Lake.<\/p>\n

    IWLA National Scholarship<\/h1>\n

    You may be eligible to apply for the IWLA\u00a0National\u00a0Conservation Scholarship<\/a> as well, however, this\u00a0National\u00a0scholarship is not administered by our chapter.<\/p>\n
